This EP was produced as part of the crowd funding campaign to help press our 2015 album Yield to Despair. The idea was to create an ambient/noise EP as a bonus record. It ended up being a bit louder than intended in parts.... and grew to 42 minutes but the majority of it still improv (all of tracks 3-5) so it still captures what we were originally going for! Like Demise, the B-side on the Downbeat EP, The Black Captain is very much a companion record for Yield to Despair.

It's titled, *The Black Captain*, in honour of the late Pete Dunstan, who
sadly passed away in October 2015. Pete was a great supporter of our band, and dark music in general - especially dark music from Perth. He was a presenter on our local radio station, RTRFM (the best radio station on the planet) and a writer of great talent, most recently reviewing for Life is Noise. We strongly recommend you check out his writing here: lifeisnoise.com/author/theblackcaptain/ - you'll find great talent, and learn about a lot of great music in the process. This one's for you, Black Captain. RIP.

Here's some information about how each song came to be:

(1) Immeasurable -
Album introduction featuring a vintage pump organ, analog bass synth, local North Dandalup weather and a hint of vocal. This song also introduces some of the progressions and themes to be covered in Reprieve.

(2) Reprieve -
A track dreamed up specifically for this release, it touches on ideas from Yield to Despair but doesn't feature the same sense of dread.

(3) Penny Market Noise -
A track taken from the sessions of jams while we were working on the 'noise section' for The Albanian Sleepover Pt. 2. It presents similar themes but steers clear of fast growth and erratic inserts, as it slowly forms moments of cohesion. Its sadness reflects a Penny Market supermarket we visited in the Czech countryside, trying to buy the cheapest possible breakfast while on tour. Grim times.

(4) In Dreams -
A track lifted from a jam between Luke, Behn and Ron in August 2015. Luke is initially making synth and sample noise, Ron enters with strings and Bass Synth and Behn uses his noise rig to insert the string like melody that repeats through out. After that, drums enter and bass enters, initially atop the bass synth but then taking over as the track ends.

(5) Unyielding -
Starts with sample loops made by Luke, then merges into an improv jam recorded during rehearsal in mid-2015. Fun fact: The drummer who played on Tiny Fragments & the SMW Split (James Hoey) visited the studio this day and sat on the couch drinking beer watching us record this.
